It’s the end of an era for the Waikerie Magistrates Court.

Last year sittings at the court were temporarily shifted to Berri while an assessment of security and facilities was undertaken at Waikerie.

Following the assessment it has now been approved for sittings to cease altogether after the approval was given from the State Courts Administration Council last month.

Previously the Court only held sittings one day per month, as part of the network of ‘circuit’ style courts in country areas.

Via a statement it was revealed the cost to bring the facilities up to a standard to support the proper administration of justice and provide a safe environment for the judiciary, court staff and court users was prohibitive, and that not all inadequacies could be addressed.

Matters that would previously have been heard in Waikerie will continue to be listed at the Berri Magistrates Court.
