Flood damaged road to be fixed

A flood impacted road will now be repaired, following a lengthy series of discussions between a local Council and the State Government.

Lyrup road was damaged by flood waters during the 2022/23 Murray River flood event, however with the damage only identified after the flood, Council was looking at footing some of the repair bill.

The road in question was absorbed by the Berri Barmera Council some years ago, however does not service any rate payers nor council townships.

This week Council announced the road would now be repaired by the State Government, who will also fund 100% of the repair.

Berri Barmera Council Mayor Ella Winnall said she was “relieved” the State Government had agreed to 100 per cent fund Lyrup Road’s repair.

“We thank the State Government for reaching a common-sense decision for the flood damage on Lyrup Road,” she said.

 “It’s great that the wider Riverland community will now have some certainty in regard to the longer-term access to the ferry.”

A timeline on a repair is not yet known, however more information is expected to be known soon.
