Murray Mallee Police are urging locals to be on alert for scams this tax season.

Police say scammers are impersonating Australian Tax Office (ATO) employees through several means, including texts, calls, emails & social media.

Links to tax refunds in emails are one thing to be wary of according to Police, with some fake ATO or MyGov websites looking alarmingly like the real ones.

Other tips to stay scam safe include.

  • Always log directly into your myGov account to view correspondence.
  • Don’t trust caller ID or the ‘sender’ of an email, as scammers can manipulate these.
  • Never provide personal information or bank details via SMS, social media or email
  • If you’re unsure, contact the ATO on a 1800 008 540 or go to the ATO’s Verify or report a scam webpage, to see how to spot and report a scam.

Further information on Tax Scams can be found via the ATO’s scam alerts page.
